MHBC INSURANCE INFO AND FAQ

The MHBC offers all club members, Ride Leaders, and Board members liability insurance coverage provided through the League of American Bicyclists. The details of the Insurance Policy can be found here: LAB INSURANCE

Members of the MHBC, while riding on a MHBC ride, are covered under the general liability policy for third party claims of bodily injury, property damage, and personal & advertising injury. Medical bill can be considered on an excess basis (this coverage is excess over any other valid and collectible insurance).

Listed below are some hypothetical cases that could arise on an official club ride. These scenario’s were sent to our insurance provider and their response to each scenario is listed.

First scenario:

I'm on a club ride and I'm a paying club member.  While going down a hill, I hit a pothole and lost control and crashed.  No one's fault but my own.  My very expensive $10k bike I just got last week has a cracked frame and lot's of other damage that costs $7k to repair.  I also have a broken arm and other medical issues and after my medical deductibles etc. I'm out of pocket $5k.  Is any of this covered by our club insurance?

Insurance Provider Answer:

The bike is not covered as this is a liability policy, not a property policy. The medical bills can be considered on an excess basis. This coverage is excess over any other valid and collectible insurance.

Second Scenario:

I'm on a club ride and I'm a paying club member and so is everyone else on the ride.  While riding down a road, another club member thought we were going to make a right turn, but in fact the route we were on was going straight.  That club member turned right into me and caused me to crash.  Clearly it was that person's fault.  My very expensive $10k bike I just got last week has a cracked frame and lot's of other damage that costs $7k to repair.  I also have a broken arm and other medical issues and after my medical deductibles etc,, I'm out of pocket $5k.  Is any of this covered by our club insurance?  If I decide to sue the person who caused the crash, does the club insurance cover that person's liability?

Insurance Provider Answer:

No coverage for the owned bike. Medical bills can be considered for payment on an excess basis.  Members of the club are covered under the general liability policy for third party claims of bodily injury, property damage and personal & advertising injury.

Third Scenario:

I'm on a club ride and I'm a paying club member. During the ride I misjudged a turn and crashed into the brand new lamborghini car that was stopped at the stop sign and did nothing wrong.  I just caused $20K worth of damage to his car.  Does the club insurance cover me for my liability?

Insurance Provider Answer:

Club members are covered under the general liability policy for third party claims of bodily injury, property damage and personal & advertising injury.

Fourth Scenario:

I'm the Ride Leader and posted a ride and all the riders are club members.  During the ride we turned down a road that had lots of potholes from the past winter and I was not aware of the condition of the road.  A rider crashes and blames the Ride Leader for posting a ride that was unsafe, and sues me for the damages ( to his bike and medical, pain, suffering etc..) Does our club insurance cover the ride leader?

Insurance Provider Answer:

Club members are covered under the general liability policy for third party claims of bodily injury, property damage and personal & advertising injury.
