Think you’re sitting on your bike? Think again!

The comfort and support of your saddle is the keystone of your bike fit. Without it, the rest of your fit, no matter how well analyzed or adjusted, just can’t come together. Many of our clients have a “just okay” relationship with their saddle, and don’t realize what they’re missing out on until trying some others in a proper position.

We see the downstream effects of poor saddle comfort or support from head to toe. A rider unable to truly rest their bodyweight on their saddle will appear on their tip -toes, in spinal flexion, and without a smooth or even application of force to their pedals. They can experience this in excess pressure, pain, or numbness at their hands and feet. If the weight isn’t going into the saddle, it has to go somewhere!

Helping a rider find a saddle that allows them to fully release tension in their forearms, shoulders, quads, calves, and feet is one of the great “ah-ha” moments in bike fitting. Then it’s from this neutral, stable, supported position that we can start to improve how they’re applying power to the pedals. So if you struggle to “Sit hard” on your saddle or think a saddle should feel uncomfortable and deal with discomfort, think again.

2024 C Rider Survey Summary

Thanks to the 23 club members who responded to the 2024 C Rider Survey. The results provide insights to help us increase participation for riders who want to ride under 30 miles with moderate hills.

Facts of life in the club:

• Our route selections are limited by geography and roads provided by state and local governments. 

• Ride leaders select the routes they want to share for the participants to have the best experiences. 

• MHBC is very limited by the number of our members who are willing to plan and lead rides. All 23 respondents will participate in the rides, but we have only 24% who are willing to lead them.

The Hudson Valley gives us some of the country's finest cycling opportunities right in our neighborhoods. 

Most of us drive to another town to participate in a club ride.

Most of us prefer rides in the mornings or afternoons. Weekend rides are preferable, but weekdays are fine too. Rest stops and post-ride socialization are desirable but not an absolute requirement.

Two of the main goals of the MHBC leadership are to provide more ride opportunities for C-riders and gravel riders of all levels.

To date, the club has accomplished the following:

• We have added more C and gravel rides to our calendar.

• We upgraded from paper to a digital sign-in application that enables ride leaders to communicate with participants.

• We developed a Ride Leader Training Guideline on the club website to help new ride leaders. 

Please remember that we are an all-volunteer organization that relies on our members to plan our rides and events. Please consider planning and leading a ride or helping to organize club events. Just like our bikes, we don’t get anywhere unless we pedal.

A Note from the VEEP

I have enjoyed participating as a member and officer of MHBC for over forty years. At eighty, although I’m not nearly so strong or resilient, I enjoy going out as often as possible to get some sunlight and exercise, absorb the beauty of our natural surroundings, and enjoy the friendship and camaraderie of my many friends. Several years ago, I bought an e-bike. This enabled me to keep going with my younger buddies.

I’m fully retired and willing to do some more leisurely rides with like-minded people. You can sign up for some of the “C” rides and events on our calendar or reach me directly. We can plan a ride and invite others to join us via the club calendar.
