Dutchess County Passes Three-Foot Safe Passing Law!On Tuesday, October 13, the Dutchess County Legislature passed the Defined Safe Passing Law, requiring motorists to leave at least three feet of clearance when passing people on bicycles. Dutchess County now joins just seven of New York’s 62 counties with a defined safe passing law. Currently, every state that borders New York has already adopted a statewide safe passing law, making this an important step toward bringing our local roads in line with our neighboring states. For Mid Hudson Bicycle Club members, this is a meaningful victory. Whether we’re riding country roads, commuting through town, or exploring new routes across Dutchess County, a clear three-foot passing standard reinforces our right to share the road safely. While the law alone won’t eliminate dangerous encounters, it establishes an important benchmark for motorists and provides a foundation for education and enforcement that previously was not there. This achievement demonstrates the power of local cycling advocacy and the collective political voice of our 600+ member organization. Alongside many Mid Hudson Bicycle Club members, the coalition included BikePoughkeepsie, Beacon Bicycle Coalition, Lisa Kaul, Trevor Redl, Alix Winsby, Daniel Attona, and others who helped build support through public outreach, petition signatures, and engagement with county lawmakers. The passage of this law is worth celebrating, but our work continues. Safety improvements to our roads, better bicycle infrastructure, and continued advocacy are all essential to making Dutchess County a place where cyclists can ride with greater confidence.
